Argentine Tango Lessons in Vancouver

A walk, a turn, a pause: Argentine Tango gives you time to feel a change of weight and share it with a partner. Learn with me in Mount Pleasant, Vancouver, whether you are taking your first steps or returning to movements you want to develop.

The walk and the embrace

Argentine Tango is built around walking together. Small changes of weight and direction travel through the embrace, telling a partner when to step, turn or wait. Pivots and crossing steps grow out of that shared walk.

The rhythm is flexible: you can linger with the melody, then take quicker steps to the beat. The closeness comes from the attention between two people. A simple walk or a well-timed pause can feel as satisfying as a more elaborate movement.

From a shared walk to a turn

Walking gives us a clear place to begin. We can work on changing weight, staying balanced and feeling when a step starts and finishes. A change of direction then becomes something both partners can follow.

As you add pivots and crossing steps, we keep returning to that shared movement. Where is your weight before the turn? How does the movement reach your partner? There is time to slow down a transition and try it again with music.

Taking time with the music

The dance does not have to travel at one speed. Try a walk with the melody, a quicker change of weight or a pause that lets a phrase finish. A few familiar movements give you something to return to while you explore those choices.

If you already dance, bring a movement or transition you want to work on. We can look at its balance, how it is led or followed, and how changing the timing affects what you feel together.

How I teach

The way I teach depends on how you learn. I’ll explain things, show you, and dance with you. If something isn’t clicking, we’ll try a different approach. We’ll take time to work through the movement and practice it with music.

If you come on your own, I’ll be your dance partner. If you come with a partner, I’ll help each of you with your movement and with how you dance together. You’re welcome to learn leading and/or following.

Questions about private Argentine Tango lessons

Can I begin without dance experience?

Yes. We can start with walking, changing weight and sharing a comfortable connection. Turns and crossing steps can grow from that foundation as it becomes more familiar.

Can I take lessons on my own?

Yes. Private lessons are for one or two people. Come on your own and dance with Dominic, or come with a partner.

Do you also teach Ballroom Tango?

Yes. American and International Tango have their own descriptions on the Ballroom page. This page focuses on Argentine Tango.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that stay securely on your feet. If you are unsure about your shoes, ask before the lesson.

How many lessons will I need?

There is no fixed number. Your experience, what you want to learn and the time you spend practicing all affect how the dancing develops. We can discuss what would be useful next after your first lesson.
